2021 Australian Open Tennis
The Australian Open is the largest annual sporting event in the Southern Hemisphere. The tennis tournament, the first of the year in the Grand Slam Series (followed by the French Open, Wimbledon, US Open) is held over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. The tournament holds the record for the highest attendance at a Grand Slam event, with 743,667 people attending the 2018 Australian Open.
Before settling in Melbourne the Australian Open, first held in 1905, has been staged in five Australian and two New Zealand cities: Melbourne (55 times), Sydney (17 times), Adelaide (14 times), Brisbane (7 times), Perth (3 times), Christchurch (1906) and Hastings (1912).
However, it was not designated as being a major championship by the International Lawn Tennis Federation until 1924 when the tournament committee also changed the structure to include seeding at the same time.
In 1972 the decision was made to stage the tournament in Melbourne every year as it enjoyed the biggest spectators of any Australian city. As a result the Australian Open was played at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club from 1972 until 1988, when the new Melbourne Park complex was completed.
The Melbourne Park complex features three courts with retractable roofs so allowing play to continue during rain and extreme heat. Since 2008, all of the courts in play during the Australia Open are hard courts with Plexicushion acrylic surfaces. Construction of a new 5,000 seat capacity stadium will start in 2019 as part of a $271 million redevelopment of the precinct.
Different to the other Grand Slam tournaments which all became open in 1968, the Australian Open opened to professionals a year later in 1969. The Tournament now features men’s and women’s singles; men’s, women’s and mixed doubles and junior’s championships; as well as wheelchair, legends and exhibition events.
Total prize money for the 2020 Australian Open is AUD $55,000,000. Prize money for the men and women’s singles tournaments is distributed equally and currently stands at AUD $4,000,000. The winner of the men’s singles is presented with the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup and the winner of the women’s singles is presented with the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup.
The 2021 Australian Open will be held at Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia between 18 January 2021 and 31 January 2021.
