2020 Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is named after Sam Ryder, an English business who was an entrepreneur but also a keen golf enthusiast, although he didn’t start playing until he was 50. Then he began sponsoring golf tournaments, and leading on from that came the the idea of a match between British and American pros. In early 1926 an initial competition took place, but the Ryder Cup as we know it, didn’t take place until the next year, for which Sam Ryder donated a gold trophy.

The competition runs every two years and is held alternatively at courses in the US and England. It is jointly run by the American PGA and the PGA European Tour, the PGA of Great Britain and Europe and the PGA of Europe.

The first Ryder Cup took place in Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts in 1927 and the home team won the first five contests. Then after a stop for the Second World War, the continued American dominance of the competition led to the decision to extend the UK to include Europe from 1979.

The decision was partly driven by the success of Spanish golfers on the international scene led by Seve Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido. Since then players from Belgium, France, Spain, Denmark, Germany, Sweden and Italy have been part of the European team.

Currently Europe is heading the leader board with eleven outright victories and one tied match, with the US snapping on its heels with eight wins.

The Ryder Cup is an exception within the sporting calendar as the players who take part win no prize money, despite the huge viewing figures, TV rights and sponsorship deals. They take part to be part of a Ryder Cup – hopefully winning – team and all the associated prestige.

Currently, the European team hold the Ryder Cup taking victory by 17 1/2 points over 10 1/2 in 2018 at the Albatros Course of Le Golf National in Guyancourt, France. However, the 43rd Ryder Cup 2020 rematch takes place in the USA, at Whistling Straits, Haven, Wisconsin, USA from 25 September, 2020 to 27 September, 2020.

The Ryder Cup is a match play event, with each match being worth one point. The first day sees four foursome matches (alternate shot) and four fourball matches (better ball). The home captain chooses which are played in the morning and which are played in the afternoon.

Across the event there are 28 points in total available. This means that 14 ½ points or more are required to win the cup, with 14 points or more required for the defending champion, this year the Europeans, to retain the Ryder Cup. All matches are 18 hole games.

The Ryder Cup competition format is as follows:

  • Friday/Day 1 – 4 foursome (alternate shot) matches and 4 fourball (better ball) matches
  • Saturday/Day 2 – 4 foursome matches and 4 fourball matches
  • Sunday/Day 3 – 12 singles matches

The 43rd Ryder Cup 2020 takes place at Whistling Straits, Haven, Wisconsin, USA from 25 September, 2020 to 27 September, 2020.
