2020 US Open Tennis Championship
The United States Open Tennis Championship was founded in 1881 as a grass tournament and is one of the oldest tennis championships in the world. It is held annually, running from the last Monday in August for two weeks – with the Labor Day holiday always falling during the middle weekend.
It is the fourth and final tennis major in the Grand Slam series, starting with the Australian Open, then the French Open followed by Wimbledon and finishing in the New York at Flushing Meadow with the US Open. It is the only Grand Slam tournament to be played every year since its creation.
The US Open moved from grass to clay in 1974, played on clay until 1977, but when the tournament moved from Forest Hills in 1978 it switched to a hardcourt surface called Pro DecoTurf. Every year before the tournament the courts are all resurfaced. Jimmy Connors is the only player ever to have won the US Open singles on all three surfaces (grass, clay and hardcourt) and Christ Evert is the only women to win on two surfaces (clay and hardcourt).
The tournament is owned and run by the US Tennis Association, a NFP organisation, with net proceeds from ticket sales, sponsorships and television deals all used to promote tennis in the US.
Uniquely in the Grand Slam, the US Open is the only tournament that uses tiebreaks in every set of a match. Unlike the other tournaments where if a match goes to the last possible set and there is a 6-6 tie, it continues until one player wins by two games. Also, the US Open is also the only Slam in which the women’s draw has 16 qualifiers not 12.
And some US Open firsts:
- In 1973 the US Open was the first of the Slam tournaments to award men and women equal prize money.
- further innovation followed in 1975 meaning floodlights allowing night play for the first time. Now all the US Open courts are illuminated ensuring TV coverage extends into primetime.
- And in 2006, the US Open was the first Grand Slam to use Hawk-Eye technology to provide an instant replay review of line calls.
Like other Grand Slams, the main US Open consists of five championships; men & women’s singles, men & women’s doubles and mixed doubles. There are also tournaments for senior, junior and wheelchair players.
In 2017 total prize money was US $50,400,000 with the men and women’s championships each taking just under four million dollars prize pot. In ‘real’ dollars, today’s champions are paid approximately twenty-five times more than champions were in 1973.
The 2020 US Open Tennis Championship will be held at Flushing Meadows, New York City, USA between 24 August 2020 and 8 September 2020.
