2020 French Open Tennis Championship
Second in the Grand Slam series comes the French Open, officially called called The Roland-Garros Tournament. This tournament is held at the Stade Roland-Garros in Paris, France over two weeks between late May and early June. The stadium and the tournament take its name from the French aviator Roland Garros.
Established in 1891, and originally played on sand, since 1908 it is the only Grand Slam to take place on clay courts and as such is the premier clay court tennis championship in the world played at the peak of the Spring clay court season.
The event is often considered the most physically demanding tennis tournament in the world due to the length of the championship – seven rounds, the slow-playing surface and the best of five set men’s singles matches.
Clay courts are a play leveller, taking away some of the advantages of big serve and serve and volleyers as they slow down the ball and produce a much higher bounce than grass or hard courts. Proven by the fact that some of the big players, such as Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Boris Becker and Venus Williams find it hard to control the game on this surface.
However, the flip side of that coin, is that players who play a slower game have enjoyed great success at Roland-Garros, including Rafael Nadal, Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl and Chris Evert.
In 2018 the total prize money purse was €39,197,000. Prize money is allocated on a points basis, so men and women often receive different points value based on the rules of their respective tours.
Similar to other Grand Slams there are five main events, men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. At the finals, each winner is awarded a trophy which is designed and made from pure silver, and then gets to take home custom-made pure silver replicas of the trophies they have won.
The 2020 French Open Tennis Championship, The Roland-Garros Tournament, will be held at Stade Roland Garros, Paris, France between 24 May 2020 and 7 June 2020.
